Ioannis-Athanasios Zornatzis

Ioannis is a Civil Engineer specialized in structural design. His main research interests pivot around the assessment of historic monuments and sustainable solutions for the built environment. Ioannis holds a Diploma of Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). During his studies at NTUA he also gained brief professional experience in retrofitting existing structures as a full-time intern at “Lithos Consulting Engineers”. His Diploma Thesis Historic Bridge, Plaka, Arachthos: Investigation of Structural Behavior was an investigation of the causes that led to the collapse of the masonry arch bridge located at Plaka, Greece and particularly the relation between its seismic response and the collapse mechanism. The aim of the study was to contribute to the overall effort of the research team of NTUA responsible for the restoration of the bridge. (http://gefyri-plakas.ntua.gr/)

His studies at ETH Zürich began in October 2017 with his participation in the interdisciplinary Master’s program Integrated Building Systems at the Dept. of Architecture. Since November 2018 he is also an assistant researcher at the Institute of Construction & Infrastructure Management conducting research on new materials based on clay as alternatives to concrete. He is currently working on his Master Thesis “Architecture without land: The clay-based funicular floor”, a collaborative project between the Chair of Architecture and Structure, Institute of Technology in Architecture and the Chair of Sustainable Construction, Institute of Construction & Infrastructure Management. The project is driven by the importance to re-materialize construction and to further validate topology as a key architectural tool in that effort.

Ioannis did a Master Thesis at the Block Research Group, in collaboration with the ETH Spin-off Oxara and the D-BAUG Chair of Sustainable Construction from April to November 2019.
